Online Sales Tax Competency Exam

Online Sales Tax Competency Exam
The competency exam contains 75 questions. Registrants have 120 minutes to complete this exam. Once an examinee begins, they cannot stop the exam and return at another time. Registrants must answer every question.

Examinees must answer 70% (53) of the questions correctly in order to pass the exam.

The exam covers all subjects included in the Sales Tax School I brochure available on the IPT website. Since the purpose of the Competency Exam is to determine the examinee’s ability and capacity to attend the advanced Sales Tax School II, no study materials will be provided. If an examinee does not make a passing grade on the exam, they will have to attend the school, successfully complete the final examination, and pay all the required registration fees to get credit for this course. A calculator will not be needed for this exam.

By registering for this exam, examinees are certifying that that they have the minimum pre-requisite three years of full-time experience in Sales and Use Tax. Any member submitting inaccurate or false information will be reported to the IPT Committee on Professional Ethics for disciplinary action.

PLEASE NOTE: Any applicant who wishes to challenge a school exam must also take and successfully pass a 1-hour online Ethics course as well as pass the competency exam in order to meet the completion requirements for this course. The price of the Ethics course is included in the cost for challenging a school exam. It is recommended that the ethics course be completed within two weeks of completing the competency exam.
