Senior Manager, Indirect Taxes (Santa Clara, California) - Areas of Taxation: Predominantly Sales & Use, Property Tax & 1099-Reporting, limited VAT. CMI in sales or property tax is a definite plus! The Senior Manager, Indirect Tax, is primarily responsible for owning the US indirect tax compliance filing responsibilities. This includes US sales and use taxes, property tax, business licenses, annual reports, Federal Form 945 for non-employee withholding and 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC information returns. While not directly responsible for worldwide indirect taxes, the role includes understanding and advising the Head of Tax and others at headquarters tax on indirect tax matters in the field. This role is responsible for the oversight of the rates in the SAP ERP. Future responsibilities include management of the indirect tax engine logic for the ERP system. This position is responsible for the tax audit controversy. Provide guidance and training to internal shared service departments with regards to taxability, property tax filing requirements, 1099/W-9 form tax compliance requirements and other related indirect topics. Prepares tax reports and assures tax compliance. Creates and leads sales, use or property tax data bases and reports as needed for audits and compliance. Takes full responsibility for tax planning, research, compliance, and audits in the assigned areas of responsibility. Works on a variety of projects, including those which are sophisticated in nature requiring a high level of tax and/or system expertise. Acts as a consultant/advisor to management, other staff members and other organizations within AMD on tax and related issues. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Leads one US staff member and collaborate closely with the Global Tax Services team members. Coordinates with a general accountant who prepares business licenses and annual report filings and payments. Forecasting indirect tax payments. Preparing or supervising preparation of monthly journal entries. Ensures compliance with state and local tax laws and regulations. Participates & leads monthly nexus meetings to ensure AMD is registered in all states where we have a business presence. Registers new locations and businesses for indirect taxes. Arranges for quarterly meetings with legal, human resources, compensation, travel, and others to ensure all imputed income amounts for 1099-MISC are properly reported. Supervises periodic general ledger account reconciliations for indirect tax accounts and makes the required SOX 302 certifications. Responsible for providing management with estimated and actual sales, use and property tax accrual information, as well as information on other indirect tax filings. Leads and coordinates property tax and sales/use tax audits as assigned, including audit negotiations. Responds to B Notices and other correspondence regarding 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC filings. Leads all aspects of property valuations and the appeals process, as vital. Prepares and arranges for property tax accruals. Responds accurately and timely to inquiries from business units and external vendors / customers regarding taxability of purchases or sales. Performs research and acts as advisor for tax management and other AMD departments to achieve efficient tax savings and compliance. Trains and supervises subordinates, service center employees and contractors. Monitors and reviews taxability of purchase transactions. Supervises state and federal legislation impacting AMD via proactive work through various trade/industry organizations. Quantifies impact of proposed legislation to our operations. Prepares and delivers detailed tax training to minimize taxability errors and exposures, and to maximize tax credits and exemptions. This includes maintenance of tax manuals used by procurement. Owns the sales and purchases exemption certificate processes. Assists procurement and legal in reviewing and making recommendations for tax-related clauses in corporate contracts in assigned tax areas. Analyzes existing and new software systems and business processes to ensure proper compliance/audit data, reporting capabilities and record retention. Identify and assist with the implementation of system improvements where vital. Participates as indirect tax lead on new company projects by attending meetings to sure proper tax planning and implementation before “go live” dates. Ensure internal systems (SAP/ future tax engine) are maintained/updated. Produces data bases for compliance and audits. Prepares ad hoc reports for Management. Reviews related tax literature to stay on top of current tax developments. Identifies indirect tax issues impacting AMD and performs analysis and research to resolve appropriate action. Ensures staff development and provides timely feedback and opportunities for professional growth and learning. Develops process improvements for business procedures and systems, including automation. Prepares quarterly journal entries for reverse charge and intra-community supply netting for quarter end financials. Assists in due diligence and integration of newly acquired businesses as needed. Review, assess, and lead external tax advisers. Works on related projects and/or assignments as needed. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Prior experience working as a state auditor. Experience with SAP ECC and/or SAP Hana a plus. Experience with Thomson Reuters research tools a plus. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Microsoft PowerPoint. Excellent oral and written communication skills needed to communicate within and without the organization. Strong presentation skills. Proven track record to work cross-functionally and influence/change Detail oriented and excellent analytical skills. Able to work independently with good decision-making skills. A Bachelor’s degree in tax, accounting or other related business field or equivalent combination of training and tax experience plus CPA certificate or MBA is desirable.
