Meet IPT's New President 
April M. Nevarez, CMI, is the Director of Sales & Use Taxes at The Michaels Companies, Inc. (“Michaels”), a nationally known arts and craft supplies retailer located in Irving, Texas. She has an extensive amount of experience in state and local taxes including managing all aspects of a corporate indirect tax function for entities with complex organizational structures and operations in multiple jurisdictions. She currently responsible for all indirect tax matters (except property taxes) and serves as the Treasurer for Michaels CARES.
April has also been responsible for all aspects of tax compliance and planning from a federal, international, and state and local perspective of a two different multi-billion-dollar companies prior to Michaels. She was a state tax consulting professional for Deloitte and SC&H Group LLC earlier in her career. She received her B.S. and M.B.A from the University of Texas at El Paso.
She has served on the Council of State Taxation (COST) Tax Policy Committee and the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Committee. She has served on the IPT Income Tax Symposium Committee from 2010 through 2014, 2017, where she was Vice-Chair and Co-Chair in 2013 and 2014 respectively. She has served on the CMI Professional Designation - State Income Tax Committee since 2013, the IPT Nominating Committee in 2015 and the Chair of the Uniformity in Administrative Requirements Committee from 2017 through 2021. She has served on the IPT Annual Conference Committee, in 2015 as the Income Tax Chair and in 2016 as the Overall Conference Chair. She has served as a member of IPT’s Board of Governors for the term June 2016 through June 2019 and as an officer since July 2020. In June 2017 she was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from IPT.
April and her husband Carlos moved last year making Texas their home with their labradoodle Dutch.
