The program is designed to help tax personnel who have minimal experience in the property tax area. There are no prerequisites for this course. Basic property tax principles, concepts, and technical skills are some of the topics covered. In addition, you will also learn about essential valuation principles and practices, and how they relate to the overall property tax function. Registrants reside at the modern Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center which is conveniently located near the collegiate campus. Successful completion of a final examamination is required.
Purpose of the Property Tax School: The purpose of the Property Tax School is to provide a basic but comprehensive foundation in the theory and practice of property tax management for businesses, including demonstration of valuation techniques used by property tax pro-fessionals. The school is recommended for individuals with less than five years of experience in the field and little or no exposure to appraisal training. The course will be conducted by a faculty team of experienced tax professionals who will facilitate an informative, cooperative and effective educational environment consistent with the highest standards of adult continuing education and the Institute.
Objectives of the Property Tax School:
- Develop an understanding of ad valorem property taxation within the business environment.
- Develop a working knowledge of the business property tax profession, beginning with property tax administration, management and practice, and including real and personal property issues, valuation, taxation, compliance, audits, and tax-saving opportunities.
- Develop an applied understanding of property valuation and appraisal principles.
- Develop a clear understanding and appreciation of proper ethical conduct in the business property tax profession.
- Facilitate the development of a network of professional colleagues to assist each other in solving property tax administration problems.

Intermediate Personal Property Tax School

The Intermediate Personal Property Tax School is a comprehensive school, which provides an in-depth investigation of personal property taxation. It is designed for property tax personnel who have a basic knowledge of the property tax area. Completion of the Institute´s Basic Property Tax School or comparable experience/education is required. Emphasis is placed upon student participation and group discussion.
If you are searching for ways to enhance your skills in personal property tax management, this school is for you. The IPT Personal Property Tax School builds on your fundamental knowledge of property tax issues using a unique arrangement of informative lectures and participation in small group workshops. Students will be able to expand their current knowledge of personal property tax, classification, valuation, audits, and appeals. Previous coursework or experience is recommended. Sessions will be held in the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center, where registrants will also reside.
Note: Submitting a registration form or registering online does not guarantee your acceptance to the course due to limitations on the number per company should the school be oversubscribed. Full refunds will be issued if an application is not accepted. Acceptance letters will be sent no later than September 10, 2010.
Prerequisites: Completion of the Institute's (basic) Property Tax School or three years of related experience is recommended. Employees of taxing jurisdictions (assessors) may attend this school.

Intermediate Real Property Tax School

This five-day course is a comprehensive school for property tax personnel who have some experience in the real property area. The purpose of the program is to provide students with a fundamental and integrated knowledge of property tax principles, concepts and technical skills essential in the field. The course is designed to investigate in-depth the property tax valuation process, including the three approaches to value, and related subjects. Successful completion of a final examination is required.
Prerequisites: Completion of the Institute's (basic) Property Tax School or three years of experience is recommended. Enrollment is limited to employees of member companies or government agencies.

Advanced Property Tax Academy

The Advanced Property Tax Academy is designed for property tax managers, individuals who hold the property tax CMI designation, and other experienced tax professionals who are interested in the Institute’s most advanced ad valorem tax program. The overall goal of this educational program is to enable participants to be more effective in managing property taxes and to encourage and promote the exchange of information and ideas among registrants. Attendance will be limited. The general session presentations as well as the workshops/discussion groups will focus on issues critical to real and personal property valuation and property tax assessment.
Prerequisites: Seven or more years of experience or CMI; IPT members will be given preference over non members eligible for membership.

The ABA/IPT Property Tax Seminars devote substantial time to current issues in the field and to practical solutions to recurring difficulties in handling and winning a state and local tax appeal. The faculty will address issues to property tax cases in all jurisdictions with an emphasis on those issues that apply generally to state and local tax appeals throughout the country. Audience participation will be strongly encouraged, and some working knowledge of state and local tax matters is important for those who wish to get the full benefit of the program. All tax professionals both private sector and governmental tax officials are welcome to attend.
